Alhaji Ismail was overjoyed beyond words. Just as he had provided his new bride with trunks full of gifts, he did the same for Mariya. However, Mariya outright refused to accept them. It took great effort from her relatives from Mubi to calm her down before she finally agreed to take them, as they had all traveled for the wedding.

The room next to Alhaji Ismail’s was assigned to Aminatu. The room was beautifully decorated and well-furnished.

The next day, Alhaji Ismail bid farewell to all their relatives from both his hometown and Aminatu’s village. Everyone expressed their gratitude before departing. Aminatu cried until she was exhausted—it was her first time being away from her mother and father.

That night, Alhaji Ismail gathered them in the living room and gave them heartfelt advice on marriage and how they should live together in harmony. Mariya pretended to agree, promising to treat Aminatu like her biological sister. Alhaji was beyond pleased, more than anyone could have imagined. He thought Mariya had finally accepted fate and was willing to coexist peacefully with Aminatu.

On her part, Aminatu was also happy with Mariya’s reaction. Alhaji dismissed them for the night, continuing to express his gratitude to Mariya.

"Alhaji, stop thanking me. This is destiny; it was meant to happen," Mariya said. "I promise to be good." She held his hand, assuring him that he should not worry, as she would remain humble.

Alhaji, overjoyed, hugged her. She walked him to Aminatu’s room, closed the door behind them, and wished them goodnight.

That night, after performing two units of prayer (Rak’ah), Alhaji consummated his marriage with Aminatu. He was the one to remove her veil, and he was overjoyed to discover that she had preserved her chastity despite living in town and frequently traveling to villages to sell milk.

The next morning, he helped her bathe before she went back to sleep. Meanwhile, Mariya had spent the entire night awake, crying. She vowed to end this marriage.

Alhaji spent a whole week in Aminatu’s room before resuming his business at the market. His wealth continued to increase, and he purchased a plot of land on Gwamna Road, where he began constructing a magnificent house.

Aminatu’s Suffering Begins

Once Alhaji returned to work, Aminatu’s happiness came to an end. Every morning, Mariya would wake her up from sleep and assign her all the household chores. Even though they had an Almajiri (a servant boy), Mariya refused to let him do anything. Aminatu had to do all the housework, including sweeping, washing clothes (hers and the children’s), cooking, mopping, and more.

Each day, Aminatu grew thinner. But whenever Alhaji asked about her well-being, she would insist that nothing was wrong. She even joked with Mariya about her weight loss. Mariya, on the other hand, would deceitfully tell Alhaji, “Maybe she just misses home.”

Alhaji agreed, saying, “I think you're right. I will make arrangements for her to visit her parents soon.”

Mariya was filled with jealousy and frustration.

Aminatu’s Pregnancy

As time passed, Aminatu endured five months of marriage, with each day bringing new suffering. However, Allah blessed her with a pregnancy. She didn’t experience any severe symptoms, which is why she didn’t even realize she was pregnant.

Instead of easing her burden, Mariya increased her workload, hoping the stress would cause a miscarriage. But nothing happened. Aminatu cried every day because of the mistreatment.

One night, while she and Alhaji were lying down, she suddenly started experiencing severe abdominal pain. Alhaji, alarmed, rushed out and knocked on Mariya’s door.

After a long delay, Mariya finally opened the door, yawning.

"Alhaji, what’s the matter at this hour?" she asked.

"Aminatu is unwell," he said. “She’s in the room crying in pain.”

Mariya quickly put on a show of concern. "Oh no, Alhaji! This is serious. Let’s take her to the hospital immediately," she said (pretending to be worried).

Alhaji quickly got into his car and drove to the nearest hospital. Mariya sat in the front seat while Aminatu was in the back.

Upon arrival, tests were conducted, and the results revealed that Aminatu was three months pregnant. Mariya was devastated but did her best to conceal her reaction.

Alhaji, on the other hand, was filled with joy.

Aminatu was given an IV drip, and once the pain subsided, they were discharged and returned home.

Mariya, now furious, vowed to ensure the pregnancy would not succeed. She forced Aminatu to do even more strenuous labor in the hopes of causing a miscarriage, but the pregnancy remained intact.

Eventually, Aminatu’s pregnancy reached nine months, and she safely delivered a pair of beautiful twin boys who looked exactly like her. They were incredibly fair-skinned.

The naming ceremony was grand, attended by people from Mubi and her village. The celebrations were joyous, despite Mariya's concealed resentment.
