They couldn’t complete their sentences as they stared at each other in surprise. Godwin, mustering courage, was the first to speak. “Next time, when you’re walking, watch where you’re going instead of walking carelessly.”

She simply glared at him in anger. “I’m not in the mood,” was all she said before she began gathering the scattered files without sparing him another glance. Godwin bent down, seemingly intending to help her pick up the files, but then he stopped and walked away without looking back.

“What kind of person is this?” she muttered to herself angrily. “Every time I encounter him, there’s no good in it! He’s so full of himself. Who does he think he is?” She clicked her tongue in frustration and kept ranting inwardly while picking up the files.

Two women seated nearby came over to assist her. “Don’t worry, dear. Some people are just like that. They know they’re at fault, but they’ll never admit it. He bumped into you because he was busy answering a call, but he shifted the blame to you,” one of them explained.

Together, they helped her gather the files. “Let us help you carry these since they seem too many for you,” one of them offered.

“Thank you so much. May Allah reward you,” she replied gratefully. They accompanied her to the door of the operating theater. She placed her files down, collected the ones they were holding, and thanked them again.

“It’s nothing. Be patient; everything in this world requires patience,” they said before leaving.

Inside the theater, they finally found the patient’s file, covered in dust from having been unused for so long. Dr. Magaji began scolding the patient’s husband. “What is this? You should have brought her back to the hospital a long time ago. Do you even know the condition she’s in? I warned you repeatedly to return on time, but you ignored me. I even called you to emphasize the importance, yet you still didn’t care. Do you realize the dangers of fibroids, especially now that she’s bleeding?” He banged his hand on the table and said sternly, “I’ll deal with you later.”

He stormed out to his office, leaving the man rooted to the spot, unable to move, looking utterly defeated. Dr. Magaji returned shortly, dressed in his surgical attire, having performed ablution. Without sparing the man another glance, he donned his gloves and entered the operating room, ready to begin the procedure.

The team consisted of Dr. Magaji, a specialist administering the anesthesia, Dr. Salma, and the nurses, including Janan. The patient, now unconscious, had been changed into surgical attire and prepped for the operation.

Dr. Salma began sterilizing the surgical tools. Dr. Magaji handed the anesthesia syringe to Janan and instructed, “Administer this to her to ensure she doesn’t wake up during the operation. The pain could cause her to regain consciousness.”

Janan’s hands began trembling, her eyes welling up with tears. Seeing her nervousness, Dr. Magaji took the syringe back and gave it to Aisha, who swiftly administered it. Zee set up the IV drip. Although it’s uncommon for nurses to administer anesthesia or set up drips, Dr. Magaji trusted them because of their intelligence and composure.

With everyone ready, the bright surgical lights were turned on, and the operation began. However, Janan couldn’t handle the sight and started crying uncontrollably. Dr. Magaji motioned for her to step outside since she was visibly distressed.

Janan quickly left the room and sat on a bench outside, burying her head in her hands as she sobbed. Realizing that crying wouldn’t solve anything, she decided to head to the hospital’s mosque. There, she prayed several units of Nafl, fervently asking Allah to grant the woman healing and to bless Dr. Magaji and the team with success.

After finishing her prayers, she picked up a Qur’an and began reciting. Gradually, she felt her heart calm down. She spent nearly an hour in the mosque before returning to the bench where she had been sitting earlier.
